Lunchtime seminar at St Peters Church - The Last General Absolution of the Munsters at Rue du Bois…..The Painting, the Artist and the Battle Thursday 19th August @11.00 am a Presentation by Military Historian Gerry White

The Last General Absolution of the Munsters at Rue du Bois

The painting, The Last General Absolution of the Munsters at Rue du Bois, by the Italian war artist Fortunino Matania is one of the most iconic images of the First World War. In the years following the war, prints of the painting are believed to have hung on the walls of many houses in the city and county of Cork as a memorial to the Irishmen who fought and died in the conflict. While many people will be familiar with the painting, few will know who and what it depicts, who painted it, and the battle that took place the day after the ‘Last Absolution’.  Military historian Gerry White will examine these questions in a presentation he will give at St. Peter’s, Cork, at 11 a.m. on Thursday, 19 August.
