Cork Harbour Festival: Lunchtime Lectures

Date: June 5th, 6th and 7th

Place: St. Peter's Cork, North Main Street

We are delighted to host a series of three lunchtime lectures for this year’s Cork Harbour Festival!

In collaboration with UCC History Department, we bring you three talks on maritime heritage and history by three experts in the field.

Each talk begins at 13.10. Arrive early for a creamy coffee in our in-house café and take some time to explore our current heritage exhibition ‘A City by the Sea’ which tells the story of over 1000 years of Cork’s maritime history. Expect tales of pirates, patriots, emigrants, queens, chancers and warriors who sailed upon the River Lee.

Here’s the schedule of the lunchtime lectures:

Tuesday, June 5th, 1pm: Ireland and the Islands of Ocean in Medieval Maps

Dr Diarmuid Scully lectures in medieval history at UCC. His research interests include medieval maps and representations of Irish and English identity in text and image.

Wednesday, June 6th, 1pm: A Croatian tourist town with a socialist legacy: Pula and the Uljanik shipyards

Dr Chiara Bonfiglioli lectures in Gender and Women’s studies at UCC and conducts research on gender and women’s history in former Yugoslavia.

Thursday, June 7th, 1pm: For Ireland and Empire: The 19th century migration of Irish professionals to British India and other parts of the Empire

Dr Christopher Shepard is a historian and international Strategy Officer managing UCC’s operations in South Asia. His research focuses on higher education and the Irish Diaspora with a special focus on the Irish in India.
